Performance of

backgroundStandards & Learning
We Tell Stories, a multiethnic, traveling children’s theater company, is a non–profit organization dedicated to theater and arts education since 1981. We reconnect young audiences with the power and wisdom of storytelling through story-plays adapted from all cultures and times. Youngsters learn oral, aural, visual, kinesthetic and other aspects of theater by participating in our interactive, extemporaneous performances. Learning extends into classrooms with workshops and residencies for students and professional development for educators. We are a premier provider of assembly performances reaching over 100,000 kids annually. Our public performances are in museums, art centers, theaters, festivals, and special events.
program
On Our Feet In Open Court provides assembly performances based on stories from each K-5 grade level of the Open Court Reading Series for the 2000 or 2002 editions. Three actors arrive with a trunk full of costumes and props to perform three story-plays each from a different grade level. Our extemporaneous, interactive performance style demystifies the process of creating theater and connects students and teachers with VAPA standards. Youngsters participate as actors from their seats with their voices, faces and bodies and then on stage playing integral roles in every performance. Concepts of character, plot and motivation help students visualize and internalize the stories. Literacy becomes a more accessible and compelling goal. Teacher Handbooks are provided for pre and post-show activities. This Handbook clearly outlines the We Tell Stories' process of turning stories into plays and is designed to aid Theatre VAPA Standard instruction in the classroom.
