Students, teachers participate in RTC classes

backgroundStandards & Learning
Rock The Classroom was founded in 2003 by Richard Foos(founder of Rhino Entertainment), Adlai Wertman(CEO of Chrysalis), and Bradley Kesden (our Executive Director) after public schools had virtually eliminated arts and music classes both because of budget cuts as well as a reluctance to take the time to teach subjects not covered by standardized tests. By creating our program around the schools’ existing curricula and supporting their academic accountability requirements, we have been able to bring music back into some of the neediest classrooms in Los Angeles and we have been able to give our students a better understanding of their existing lessons.
program
ROCK THE CLASSROOM wants to get music back into public school classrooms in a way that will have critical academic benefits for the children. Our musicians guide children in comparing and contrasting poems and songs related to the stories they’re reading; they encourage the students to sing, create their own lyrics and melodies, and “score” stories and poems. Students are provided with simple percussive instruments (drums, shakers, bells) to help them learn the building blocks of music and to spark their interest with a variety of hands-on experiences in different musical applications and multiple musical genres. The children learn the vocabulary of their basic lessons alongside the vocabulary of music; they practice critical literacy skills as they interpret lyrics and poems set to music; they learn to write and to appreciate the written word as they learn more ways of expressing themselves.
