A visual voyage of ReCreate by Trash for Teaching

backgroundStandards & Learning
Trash for Teaching is dedicated to strengthening education and promoting environmental awareness through creative reuse, primarily in the visual arts. By making our materials and visual arts programs readily available to schools, teachers, and community organizations, we help bridge the gap between the excess of waste created in manufacturing processes and the lack of materials in public education. Use of our materials also encourages critical thinking and stokes the imagination by challenging children and teachers to find creative applications for non-traditional objects.
program
ReCreate comprises in-school activities designed to help participants understand the educational benefits of using cast-off materials (that would otherwise become trash) to complement the core curriculum. This comprehensive program emphasizes the importance of observation, exploration, assessment, reflection, revision, documentation and presentation. We integrate multicultural and historical found-object art and artists in our teaching of student-centered investigation of the creative process. Additionally, the inherent open-ended quality of T4T materials offers an inspiring pallet for the visual arts while reinforcing critical thinking and creative problem solving in all subject areas. As they develop visual arts techniques, students are able to express themselves as individuals in terms of their cultural heritage, personal beliefs, and vision of the world.
