“We are a troupe of individuals who, through the power of music and dance, cultivate self-worth, dignity, and respect for all people.” Culture Shock began in 1993, as a diverse collective of dancers brought together to exchange ideas and share a passion for urban dance. Culture Shock LA continues to use Hip-Hop dance forms to involve traditionally underserved populations in the arts, and promote concepts such as self-expression, critical thinking, and cultural awareness through artistic development. With support from LA County Arts Commission, City of LA DCA, Supervisor Knabe, and the Flourish Foundation, Culture Shock LA reaches thousands of youth and adults through instructional workshops, school assemblies, and professional performances.
Program
Students will gain insight into the foundation of Hip-Hop dance and culture, while exploring ways in which individuals affect the development of history. Hip-Hop emerged as a vehicle of positive self-expression from a community of young people who felt ignored. It was their experiences within this dynamic environment that shaped and inspired creativity in people who became pioneers of the Hip-Hop movement. Through interactive movement exercises and discussions, the program prompts students to use critical thinking skills to identify experiences that have shaped them into unique individuals and also explore the joy of creativity and self-expression. Key concepts include embracing individuality and respecting diversity. Students will learn fundamental dance movement/terminology and utilize creativity in a freestyle dance circle.
